Ancora Waterfront Dining and Patio - Ambleside

Cuisine: Japanese, Peruvian, Seafood
Price Point: Mains from $20 - $35+

A Peruvian Japanese celebration of seafood served in a slick, contemporary dining room with sweeping views of the Burrard Inlet, Stanley Park and Point Grey.

Set just back from the city’s waterfront, the Ambleside location uses a palette of neutral colours and touches of light wood and also incorporates a theatre-like open kitchen and bar that invites guests to engage with the chef and sommelier teams.

Fabulously varied menus combine the highest quality local seafood with exotic ingredients such as aji amarillo (Peruvian yellow chili) and sakekazu (the lees left over from sake production).

Start with a selection from the raw bar, including freshly shucked oysters and housemade sushi, before moving on to the likes of roast yam soup, lobster and shrimp risotto, and sablefish with bok choy. There are even a few mouthwatering non-seafood options - try the cauliflower steak with the option to add braised shortrib.

The cocktail list changes to reflect the seasons by incorporating wildflowers and herbs, but there is always a killer selection of sours - of course the best Peruvian pisco sour in the northern hemisphere - not helpful for finding your sea legs!

A meal at Ancora is always a gastronomic journey and a foodie experience to savour.

My boyfriend and I went here see what Peruvian and Japanese fusion is like. We both had a wonderful time, the interior was lovely with a very impressive wine cellar wall right as you enter the place. We were seated promptly and right next to the cooking area. We really enjoyed the open kitchen concept where we can see the food being prepared.

The food was wonderful on my end, however my boyfriend was not as impressed. I had The Glacier, a cold platter of assorted seafood. The oysters were nice and sweet, the mussels were very flavorful (the hint of wine was very unique), and the ceviche was super fresh. Both my boyfriend and I liked the crispy corn. I especially liked the spicy ponzu sauce that went well with everything on the plate! The other sauce on the other hand, was a tad too salty for anything on the plate, I didn't use it much because it overpowered the seafood flavours. I also ordered two of the Uni Nigiri and hands down it was the freshest uni I've ever had. I would come back just for the uni nigiri. I was quite full just from this platter but if I had more room in my stomach, I would have ordered their lobster risotto and added freshly shaved truffles. Looking forward to trying those next time!

As for my boyfriend who is allergic to most shellfish, he went with the filet mignon steak. It did not come with any sides so he ordered the truffle potato puree on the side. The steak itself was alright, it was very lightly seasoned as there were two sauces on the side. However, the sauces did not pair well with the steak and truffle potato puree together. On its own, the steak needed more, with the potato puree it was good but not outstanding, with the potato puree and sauces the flavours clashed too much (aji verde sauce had a distinct cilantro taste, and soy vinaigrette did not add much to the palate). The steak was cooked medium rare perfectly but if you want a trully memorable experience, go with the seafood options.

The service was outstanding. Waters filled promptly and utensils/plates were cleared/brought to the table as needed. A couple small slices of brioche and spread were brought to the table as soon as our orders were taken and an amouse bouche to start was also given. They gave us plenty of time to finish our meals and there was no rush at all. The manager who processed our bill and payment was very knowledgeable about the history of the Japanese/Peruvian fusion and was very friendly.

Overall I would definitely go back to this place. Maybe I'll bring a few friends next time (non-allergic ones for sure) to try more of the seafood options. Thank you Firsttable for introducing me to this place!

Ancora is a very modern fine dining full experience. The staff provide all the menu details, plate descriptions and precise table attendance without overwhelming. They seem aware of when to be quietly efficient and when they can add value to the experience. The food presentation strikes the perfect balance between a simplicity which highlights each item, and unique accompaniments or delivery so that each dish has a quality of abundance.

The restaurant has very nice decor and ambiance. The service was great and the food was also very good. The sea bass was amazing. We also ordered the tenderloin which was delicious. So were the sushi rolls. Loved the brussel sprouts as well. Can’t wait to go back.

The service was on par as the food. Absolutely excellent. The food was lovely. I truly enjoyed the oysters and the sea urchin taglierini. The other seafood dishes we ordered tasted so fresh, and the service was very attentive. I wouldn't had felt as at ease to try as many variety of dishes if it weren't to First Table.

*Not a review, but a reminder for those dining with First Table: Tip your server the same amount you would if you were paying a full bill, and not of the price it is at 50%. If your bill totals to $80, but with the 50% off it equates to $40, then make sure to tip x amount as you would for the $80 service. :)
