Cuisine: Japanese, Peruvian, Seafood
Price Point: Mains from $20 - $35+
Ranked: #1 of 21 restaurants in Vancouver

A Peruvian Japanese celebration of seafood served in a slick West Coast dining room.

Ancora False Creek’s dining space was designed with soft modern lines that embrace the warmth and richness of the city’s waterfront landscape. The interiors feature a subtle mix of sand-inspired neutrals, light woods and fishnet-inspired crystal chandeliers to thoughtfully reflect a gentle, coastal feel and serene but sophisticated style.

Fabulously varied menus combine the highest quality local seafood with exotic ingredients such as aji amarillo (Peruvian yellow chilli) and sakekazu (the lees left over from sake production).

Start with a selection from the crudo bar, including freshly shucked oysters, before moving on to the likes of housemade sushi, roast yam soup, lobster and shrimp risotto and sablefish with bok choy. There are even a few mouthwatering meat options – try slow-cooked chicken stew with gnocchi, walnuts and olives.

The cocktail list changes to reflect the seasons by incorporating wildflowers and herbs, but there is always a killer selection of pisco sours - not helpful for finding your sea legs!

A meal at Ancora is always a gastronomic journey and a foodie experience to savour.

This was definitely not my first time to Ancora as I've been a fan ever since it changed over from C Restaurant. As always the flavors were up front. Me and my friend shared the glacier for two to start. Everything was perfectly prepared and delicious and fresh above all else. Then we had the sable fish and cauliflower steak mains. The sable fish is kick in the face with the best miso flavor ever. Its sweet and savoury..and the fish...perfectly cooked! The cauliflower steak had a nice color and flavour as well that wasn't overpowering and came with a delicious empanada! The whole time eating we enjoyed the brilliant cocktails they offer. The Pisco sour and Royal sour were so full of flavor and the egg whites kept it silky and smooth going down. We finished with the Dill Apple and their variation of donut holes! The Apple was light and fresh and the dill really added more flavor than you would think. The donuts, light and crispy and a nice chew to the center. Like I said, this wasn't my first time and it surely won't be my last! Thank you both Ancora and First Table!

The service was outstanding all the way around from Taylor (I think he was the manager) to the server. She provided just the right amount of attention not too much and not to little.
Food - very high quality food and a very interesting combination of Japanese and Peruvian. The scallops and risotto was awesome! Some of the spice combination’s were unique.
Decor and ambiance - modern, clean lines and nice views.
Pricing - be ready to pay more than your usual.

Ancora has been on my list for more than a year. Fiancé and I finally went to the Yaletown one and it didn't disappoint at all!

It's a really nice seafood restaurant along the water. You can see Granville Island across the water. We were seated at the window and enjoyed the night view.

We were given complimentary focaccia bread and butternut bread and Peruvian hummous. It was AMAZING. I'd happily buy a jar and loaves.

I ordered a seasonal gin lavender cocktail and my fiancé ordered a Royal Sour. Both were delicious and refreshing.

For starters, we had the grilled octopus and the crab caus. I always order octopus when I see it on a menu and it didn't disappoint. It was super tender and the beans and potatoes went well together. The chip was nice too. The crab was so good and aplenty! I love any mashed starch so the mash on the bottom was a win haha. The mango and nori sauce was the perfect acidic accent to the crab.

For mains, he had the lobster and prawn risotto which was rich and stuffed with sizeable lobster. Well worth the pricetag. It was a teeny bit salty though. There was edamame in the risotto too.

I had the sablefish and it's the best I've had in Vancouver. WOW. It was perfectly prepared and cooked. It was flakey and buttery. It sat on a bed of quinoa and edamame "risotto" and butternut squash puree. The bokchoy was actually tasty and added to the dish. Most western places that attempt bokchoy always undercook or overcook it with no flavour. This one tasted like it was in a wok.

Our server Brian was attentive and superb.

A great date night spot.

First time dining at Ancora and it was unreal! I had a taste of West Coast best seafood from The Glacier. The star of the show was the sea urchin taglierini! I ordered the starter size but now will definitely order the full size next time!

On arrival at the restaurant, we felt like royalty. Arriving from work, laptops and umbrellas in tote, a team of three assisted with grabbing our coats and devices to store away while we dined. We were given coat check numbers however they were not necessary as the staff managed to remember every item we came in with on the way out without prompting.

After being seated, we were brought waters immediately and our server was by less then two minutes after to take our drink orders. She was attentive and quick to respond to queue's, knowing when to give us time and when to come assist.

A friendly, and playful, sommelier attended our table three times during the meal before we embarked on the next course, eager to answer any questions and assist us with making the pairing experience memorable.

For Starters, we had:
- Bigeye Tuna Ceviche: bar none, this was one of the best ceviches i've ever had. it was marinated to perfection and melted in my mouth.
- Salmon Tartare: this was tasty, and presented with robotic perfection.
- Grilled Octopus: While this tasted fine, I found the portion size a bit tiny on this one.
- Sushi Pizza: By far, my favourite dish of the night. I could eat this every day! We were debating on ordering some sashimi and this was the best of both worlds with it's crispy rice base. Had we not have been full, we definitely would have ordered another couple orders of this item.
- Side of Brussel Sprouts: This HUGE bowl of roasted sprouts was a perfect addition to the array of flavours we embarked on in this dinner journey. This side would easily satisfy four people, if just for one - it's almost a meal in itself.

Main Course:
- Sablefish: Cooked to perfection, this was my second favourite dish of the night. Melting in my mouth, this sultry dish danced around my palate.
- Duck: I'm a huge fan of duck and this did not disappoint. Constructed with love, the beauty of this dish was definitely appreciated.

Dessert:
- Cheesecake: I don't know who sold their soul for this recipe but one order of this split between the three of us had our eyes closing, rolling into the back of our heads and collective sounds of "Mmm" radiating from our table to the last morsel.

Service wise, teams of staff rolled out our dishes as if they were a team of synchronized swimmers - surrounding our table, placing dishes, and changing dinnerware so fast that sometimes I barely noticed they were there. My water glass, and wine glass for that matter, didn't hit below 1/4 full at any point in the meal.

The only thing that dropped my rating from a 5 (and I'm not usually as gracious with ratings) was the delay it took to order our dessert. This was the only delay of the evening and we waited about 8 minutes after being handed the dessert menu before finally flagging a nearby server to take our order for us.

We hadn't even noticed the restaurant fill up but looking around at that time of the delay we saw that there wasn't an empty seat in the place, which must have just put a bit of stress on the dessert service. I was impressed at the sound design and absorption of the space - at no time during the meal did the increase of people interrupt our conversations. Our time there remained intimate and comfortable.

I will definitely return to this restaurant and hope you had the same incredible service we did.

The four of us had a fantastic time at Ancora. I had been to Ancora before for lunch + brunch but never for dinner. Our meals were huge standouts - the sablefish in particular was sensational, and even the others in our group who didn't order sablefish tried it and were similarly amazed. One of our desserts (the miniature fritters with lucuma ice cream) was one of the best I've ever had in my life.

I would say that the only slip up to this excellent evening was (and this is important for First Table diners) that Ancora did not have our reservation on file when we arrived (I had made it a full week in advance but they had nothing under my name at all). Also, service took a little while to start - we waited 10-15 minutes without being offered anything other than water before I had to flag someone down and ask if we could order drinks. All in all however nothing problematic given how superb our dinner was.

Ancora is a stunning restaurant that is perfect for date night. The atmosphere is so romantic with the gorgeous restaurant interior and mood lighting and a stunning view of False Creek. This was my first time trying Peruvian and Japanese fusion food and I was suitably impressed. The flavours were punchy and flavourful without being overwhelming. In particular I really enjoyed the ultra fresh uni sashimi, the dungeness crab causas (a Peruvian specialty) and the Sablefish. The sablefish was particularly notetworthy for its strong bold flavours that highlighted the natural flavours of the fish. An absolute must order.

My boyfriend and I had one of the best meals in Vancouver at Ancora on November 28. My boyfriend says it may have been the best he's had in 2 years living in Van.

Highlights: Food was stellar (Best dishes: Sea urchin taglierini, Sablefish); service was fun, fast, and professional. We are not 'fine diners' and this was certainly a special evening for us. Would highly recommend.

Food: 10/10, beautiful and delicate textures with excellent flavours.

We ordered several starter plates, and perhaps 10 minutes after the order, a fleet of staff swooped around our table and carefully arranged all of the dishes. It was impressive and comical at the same time; we aren't typical fine diners so it made us feel royal!
STARTERS
- Oysters: delicious, beautifully plated, generous toppings.
- Crab Causa: this was my 2nd fav. The whipped potato melted in our mouth and the quail egg was perfect.
- Sea urchin taglierini: holy crap this was delicious. Amazing flavour. Should have ordered full size. The seaweed pasta had a perfect texture and rich flavour, and the urchin was this beautiful little smoky thing that we both saved to last. Yum.
- Scallop a la permesan: we each got one and my oh my was it divine. Small, but divine. I loved the bacon jam. The trick is to get a little bit of everything in each bite.

MAINS
- I got the lobster risotto, which was super yummy and rich but I didn't rave about it. I think the starters spoiled me! I couldn't finish it due to the richness (which is weird for me) but my partner helped.
- Sablefish: WOW this was excellent. Certainly one of the Japanese inspired menu items. The fish was cooked in a way that I didn't know you could cook sablefish! Just melted in your mouth. Again, all of the flavours on the plate played together so well, the trick was to get a bit of everything in each bite.

DESSERT:
We got Japanese cheesecake, which I can't find on the menu. I think it had sesame flavour? This was great as well and wasn't too sweet.

Service: 10/10. We had Brian, who despite saying it was only his 2nd day at Ancora, was an excellent server. He obviously had lots of industry experience already (very professional) but was also super fun. He even told us we were his favourite table (although we joked that he probably says that to everyone)!

The manager stopped by our table a few times just to check on us (which was awesome!) Since we dined so early, it wasn't very crowded and it looked like he was doing the rounds.

Drinks: 9/10. We only had 2 of the cocktails (I had a gin lavender martini, and my date had one of the autumn pisco sours) so this review shouldn't count for much. They were yummy and strong but they did not blow us away. Extra points for wine, since the manager brought out what happened to be my favourite chardonnay. He said it was his last bottle, and gave us both generous free tastes.

Safe to say our bill was still pretty big (even after the First Table discount), but if you are going to try the whole fine-dining thing, do it here!

There's no question why Ancora consistently makes Canada's top 100 list. We had been wanting to check it out for a while, so when a table popped up on First Table, we thought - why not! The experience was fantastic. My favourite was the buttery miso sablefish, whilst my partner hasn't stopped raving about the delicate taglierini with sea urchin nesting on top. The lobster risotto and octopus were also highlights. Staff were very knowledgeable and helpful with the menu, and were responsive when we asked to slow down the courses. Knocked one star off service due to bringing all four starters at once (... but perhaps that was our fault for order too much). Will definitely be going back.

- dined at Ancora Waterfront Dining and Patio - False Creek on

It was a great experience. We dined for more than 2 hours but our server did not rush us. The seafood tasted fresh and all of us enjoyed the sake and sesame cheesecake dessert!

- dined at Ancora Waterfront Dining and Patio - False Creek on

Ingredient quality, flavours, service, and atmosphere were all above average. The best appetizer we had was the mixto ceviche, which had the perfect amount of citrus in it. For mains, the sablefish melted in our mouths and the duck is probably one of the best you can get in Vancouver. Unlike some other places which only focus on the main component, all accompanying components on the dishes were well executed making every bit enjoyable. With regards to the Japanese dishes (sushi / rolls), we would probably avoid them the next time around and go to a Japanese specialty restaurant to order similar items as they didn't particularly standout. The only minor complaint my spouse had was the lack of an automatic lemon wedge with the hot water. Otherwise, the service was generally well executed and timed. Overall, we had an enjoyable experience and would go back.

Great service by staff who made sure we were welcomed and well accommodated.

Dining out is not always an easy task for new parents with a baby, especially when it's at a nice restaurant. Ancora not only made us feel welcome but also ensured we were well accommodated with anything we needed while dining with our baby. Our table was set up and ready for us with a high chair and staff checked up on us and asked if we had all we needed.

Thank you for a great dinner.

We dined at Ancora on a Wednesday evening. The interior is quite lovely and I imagine the view would have been quite nice as well but it was already too dark to see anything at the time. We ordered 5 different dishes, Sea Urchin Sashimi, Dungeness Crab, Grilled Octopus, White Truffle Risotto (special of the evening), Wild and Cultivated Mushrooms, and Ling Cod.

The first two dishes to arrive were the Sea Urchin Sashimi (uni) and Dungeness Crab. The uni was so fresh and sweet, honestly one of the best uni I've had. The crab was plated very nicely and it was also delicious but paled in comparison to the uni. The second to arrive was the Grilled Octopus. It was served with shrimp crackers and potatoes. The octopus itself was a bit chewy but I found that the more I chewed it the more I was able to taste all the flavours. Last to arrive were the Truffle Risotto and Ling Cod accompanied with the Mushrooms. The Truffle Risotto was a bit on the salty side but the sauce that came with it, I think it's some type of mushroom sauce, helped cut down the salt. I was hoping to taste more of the truffle flavour but the salt was overpowering it. The Ling Cod had a good flavour but it was slightly over cooked so it was a bit more flakey and chewy than I would have liked. I really liked the forbidden rice that came with the dish though, it added a good texture to the overall dish. The Wild and Cultivated Mushrooms were actually a side dish but it came in the same sized portion as the other mains. They were absolutely delectable! The only issue was again, just a little too salty.

Overall the experience was pleasant and I enjoyed all the different dishes. We were actually quite full after our meal. I would certainly most come back again to try their other menu options, and of course, for the uni.

The service was excellent and the environment was very festive. Server was very helpful and provided us some recommendations. The food however was a bit disappointed - we had the sablefish and was very looking forward to it. When we tried it though, the quinoa and the squash on the bottom was way too salty, likely due to the sauce. We also had the spider roll, and the soft shell crab was surprisingly not very crunchy. We informed our server and he was very helpful in helping us to change the sable fish dish. Overall, service was excellent but a bit disappointed about the food.

I have heard great things about Ancora so decided it would be a good opportunity to check it out. It absolutely did not disappoint! Nice location along the waterfront. We were there on a cold dark rainy night though and the inside of the restaurant was a bit cold, maybe to do with the large windows which provide the view. The staff were very attentive. Favourite dish was the pan seared scallop with bacon jam - yum! We found that the flavour in the main dishes was nothing that really popped out - had the steak and duck dishes. Was definitely a fine dining experience.

We've been here before and knew what to expect from Ancora and they outdid themselves again with a phenomenal experience for service and quality of dishes. They have easily one of the best happy hours in Vancouver (which now goes until 6pm!)--get there early and have a few bites and a drink--their big eye tuna is some of the best I've had outside of Japan. The bone-in ribeye was excellent, tender, perfectly cooked and seasoned, and had delicious beefy flavour. My wife had the risotto with lobster, shrimp, and hazelnuts and she said it was delicious as always. The First Table discount makes this a ultra high value restaurant to go to.
